Food Tasting

"People who love to eat are always the best people." -Julia Child

As a couple, one of our favourite activities is eating. BJ and I love trying out new restaurants. Most of our dating life revolved around food. Haha! So naturally, the highlight of our wedding reception had to be the food.

And food is one of the best ways to communicate

to your guests that they are important to you.

We wanted to make sure the meal was unforgettable, so we crossed our fingers and prayed that the great Margarita Fores of Cibo di M would be available to do our reception dinner. We met with her twice and settled on a date for food tasting (and a table styling mock up with our amazing florist Zenas Pineda) at the Fort.

We were allowed (and encouraged) to bring friends to help us decide on the menu. So we got 5 of our most trusted foodie friends, plus my Mama (who happens to be amazing in the kitchen as well) for an afternoon of plain stuffing our faces.

Here are some of the things I have learned. I hope that they come in handy for when you start planning your wedding reception :)

1. Research. Find out which caterer best suits your theme, especially if you have a specific kind of cuisine in mind.

2. Prepare to spend for food! It will be one of the most (if not THE most) expensive part of the wedding. Even if you decide to keep your wedding small, that's still paying for dinner for 50 people!

3. Make it personal. What we liked about Ms. Fores was how she incorporated our stories into the dishes. She asked us which provinces we're from, what our favourite childhood dish was, if we had a common favourite comfort dish.

4. Get to the food tasting with an open mind (don't just stick to what's familiar!) and an empty stomach (it's a LOT of food).

5. Consider the profile of your guests. Will you have a lot of senior citizens who might have trouble chewing on the steak? Will you have vegetarians on your list? Enough to consider providing an alternative dish?

6. You might not get to enjoy the food at your own wedding. :( What with all the excitement and the running around entertaining guests and taking photos. So savour every bite during the tasting!

This was definitely one of my favourite parts of the planning process. And we were so happy with the final menu! Will be sharing more details on the next posts. :)
