Ask Nikki: The Everyday Make Up Tutorial

Here's the best beauty advice I've ever received:

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight."

1 Peter 3:3-4

I've had many awful things said about me and my physical appearance. And it didn't help that I was always surrounded by beautiful mestizas at work. Haha! I've had people say I look like a horse, or a drag queen, or just plain "pangit". I've heard and read it so much, that at one point, I believed it.

I used to say that my "beauty" was like durian. It's acquired taste. Not every one will find me immediately attractive.

But being surrounded by physically beautiful people in the industry also taught me something. And this is one beauty aphorism that I've proven to be true first hand. Kevin Aucoin, renowned make-up artist and author, says it best: "No amount of make up can mask an ugly heart".

I've seen the most beautiful faces in the industry, under the care of the best make up artists in the country. And yet, what's truly inside never fails to show itself. So if you ask me for a beauty tip, here's a general rule regardless of skin tone, skin type, bone structure and budget:

That said, I am still a make up junkie. Haha! I love make up and I love playing with different looks.

I started geeking out a decade ago, getting all the make up books (Youtube wasn't a thing yet) I could get my hands on, and researching on products and tools. Sephora was my happy place. I used to do my make up for Myx back when I was Vj-ing and had so much fun playing with my face with different kinds of looks.

But now that I'm much older (and obviously, have less time to sit in front of a mirror for hours of preening), this quick look is becoming a favourite.

A few disclaimers before you press PLAY:

I had just run out of foundation right as we were shooting this. This is NOT how you apply foundation. I can imagine my make up artist going berserk upon watching this. If you want me to do a video on that, please leave a comment below.

Let me know what other looks you would like me to share! :)
